Enrofloxacin – An antibiotic for respiratory tract infections.
Enrofloxacin is a veterinary antibacterial agent, used in poultry. Enrofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic developed by the Bayer Corporation .Enrofloxacin is a synthetic chemotherapeutic agent from the class of the fluoroquinolone carboxylic acid derivatives. It has antibacterial activity against a broad spectrum of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. Its mechanism of action by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase (a type-II topoisomerase), thereby preventing DNA supercoiling and DNA synthesis. It is a bactericidal agent. The bactericidal activity of enrofloxacin is concentration dependent, with susceptible bacteria cell death occurring within 20-30 minutes of exposure.
Enrofloxacin is poultry is used the control & treatment of severe respiratory infections of poultry caused by bacteria including Mycoplasmosis, Infectious Coryza, Salmonellosis , Fowl Cholera, Colibacillosis etc.
In India enrofloxacin is available in oral liquid form with 20% concentration. Many companies are offering Bromhexine along with enrofloxacin. Bromhexine is intended to support the body’s mechanisms for clearing mucus from the respiratory tract. It is secretolytic, increasing the production of serous mucus in the respiratory tract, which makes the phlegm thinner and less viscous.
Most of the veterinary pharmaceutical companies in India recommend dose of 10 mg/kg body weight for 3-5 days.
